Did you ever solve the issue? I've been having it for the past 3 distributions. :(
So how did you fix it?
I'm currently running Intrepid RC1 from my usb drive. Neither ALSA or the wifi card works. Alsa worked fine in Hardy, and the wifi card was perfect after installing the madwifi driver.

The Atheros card should have native support in the next Ubuntu release with the 2.6.25 kernel, but for now the madwifi drivers...
Yup, just goto System | Preferences | Sessions
Click add, and then type in the name of the command you'd use to run them in a terminal and give it a name so you know what it does when you look at...
