I figured it out. I just already had 10.4 on the drive and grub got corrupt when I reinstalled windows. I thought it was listing the old ubuntu. It was just too uninformative and I didn't know...

I installed pysdm and it lists /dev/sda1 as /dev/sdb2? and /dev/sdb2 is listed as /dev/sdb2 as well.

I rename sda1 to sda1 as it should be and reboot.
