I also was having this same problem, I did get my Ubuntu 11.10 fixed. You'll have to make a change in terminal to do this press Ctrl+Alt+T, This will bring up Terminal screen.

Yes give it a try and see if it works for you just remove the word Splash Remember to update sudo update-grub
Sorry I have been out of town for the last week. Well I tried this to and it still did not shutdown all the way it still hangs at the splash screen, 10.04 LTS needs a lot work yet to solve these...
