Cheap HP USB reciever + generic remote in LIRC problem

    Hi,

I am trying to get a fairly cheap and generic Hp receiver/transceiver to work with LIRC and ubuntu 10.4. I don't feel I am that far off getting something to happen, I am just at my wits end with this.

The transceiver is ostensibly a USB Hewlett Packard TSGI-IR01, in Windows it appears as an "eHome Infared Transceiver". In other Linux distributions is has been listed as a Fintek IR receiver. I don't know if that difference implies a cheap knock off or not. I have been trying both a Logitech 525 remote (with appropriate Windows Media Center configuration) and a generic WMC remote with the receiver. The receiver flashes when I press buttons on a remote, so I know it is physically working.

I get no response after trying irw, and irrecord -d /dev/lirc test gives the following response
    Code:
irrecord: could not get file information for /dev/lirc
irrecord: default_init(): No such file or directory
irrecord: could not init hardware (lircd running ? --> close it, check permissions)
lsusb gives the following. 1934:5168 is the (Fintek) reciever.

    Code:
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
    Bus 002 Device 003: ID 1934:5168
    Bus 002 Device 002: ID 07d1:3c07 D-Link System Wireless G DWA-110 Adapter
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
lsmod | fgrep "lirc" gives me
    Code:
    lirc_mceusb 12068 0
    lirc_dev 8890 1 lirc_mceusb
No /dev/lirc0? I think there is a big problem here.

Here are some of my conf. files

    I'm curious...
Did you get it off of eBay from this seller or similar wholesaler?
    http://cgi.ebay.com/HP-MCE-KIT-REMOT...item1e5fa57c94

I'm planning on building several front-ends for family and would like to reduce some costs. If these work, they can be "won" for <$10.

A cursory search shows people have mixed results.
