Exclamation Theming the mouse pointer in UBUNTU 10.04

    Hi All,

I was trying to apply a new mouse pointer theme in my UBUNTU 10.04 x64. Strange thing is that as long as my pointer is on top of some window like Firefox, Thunderbird, even the terminal the theme is working fine.

As soon as I move the cursor to the desktop I can see that old ugly pointer !

Can anyone please help me in finding what is going wrong when it in on normal desktop wallpaper area ?

    Thanks,
    Koushik

the fastest way of seeing the full change without the need to see CLI is to log out then log in again
    hope this helps

    cheers

I have the same issue. For some reason disabling desktop effects seems to work. Compiz is screwing with the cursor themes somehow.

    hi dude !
well first , can u tell me how u r changing ur mouse cursor ? lol
you should try gcursor applications > ubuntu store > search for (gcursor)
install it , appears in system > preferances > cursor select
i think that's the best way , if your not using it , well do !
    peace !

Thumbs up Re: Theming the mouse pointer in UBUNTU 10.04

Installing a pointer theme is simple... you can download and drag-drop the tar.gz file into the appearance window. Now select the theme you just installed...

Atleast that is how it used to work earlier...

Same thing keeps happening to me.
The pointer theme that I want is selected, but the cursor only uses that theme when its on some interactive thing I guess.
For example, in a text box it uses the theme.
When I want to resize windows it uses the theme.
When a webpage is loading it uses the theme.
But pretty much any other time using the computer it does not use the theme. And I tried other themes that came with Ubuntu but it wasn't working either.

    I too have Ubuntu 10.04 x64.

I just upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 using alternate iso and after enabling extra visual effects i face the same problem.

Problem : Applied cursor is used only on applications like firefox etc and a transparent black cursor appears on titlebar, desktop, taskbar and all menus.
    Please suggest some fix.
If i use None as visual effects there is no problem

It's been reported as a bug here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...er/+bug/459647

For now, here's a temporary work around from that thread:
    From the command line, run
    Code:
    sudo update-alternatives --config x-cursor-theme
and manually select the cursor you want. This will change the cursor icon, but size changes don't carry over.

I have the same problem. With extra visual effects on, I end up with a mix of old cursor and parts of customized Comixcursor theme.
